Summer Youth Program

Youth Supporting Roots is seeking Durham Public School students (13 – 16 years old) interested in community service through food pantry management, where they will learn about the business operation from the ground up. They will also benefit from mentorship provided by adult volunteers, creating a mutually enriching relationship between generations. Youth Supporting Roots Summer 2024 information:

  • Deadline for application is May 20th.
  • Selected participants will be notified of their selection with a welcome note and a 4-week schedule, on or by May 27th.
  • This summer session will be held June 10th – August 10th, 2024.  
  • Participants will serve 24 hours a week, with 5 days in-person at local food pantries or at the YSR office. 
  • The week ranges from Sunday through Saturday.
  • Stipend will pay $1,300 for each four-week period, with a total of $2,600 for the full eight weeks of service.

Student duties and expectations:

  • Be punctual
  • Greet customers and staff
  • Work as part of a team, and independently as required
  • Dress in appropriate attire* 
  • Follow safety procedures
  • Perform other duties as needed, according to site manager or designee
  •  (be able to pick up 50 lbs and stand for four hours)

*Dress code: closed-toed shoes, YSR tee shirt, knee-length skirt or slacks
